Terahertz Engineering Laboratory
Engineering the terahertz spectrum for sensing, imaging, and wireless communications.
Terahertz spectrum
The terahertz band spans 0.1–10 THz, between microwave and infrared, one of the least-exploited parts of the spectrum. Terahertz waves penetrate non-metallic materials with high spatial and depth resolution, enabling non-contact screening, non-destructive evaluation, and high-speed line-of-sight wireless links.
In-house engineering
Our team designs, builds, and characterises terahertz hardware, from metasurfaces and antennas to substrateless integrated waveguide platforms and complete systems. These components and systems underpin applications in 6G communications, non-destructive evaluation, spectroscopy, and atmospheric sensing.
Lab history
Established in 2018 under the Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities grant LE180100003, with co-contributions from RMIT University, University of Wollongong, and The University of Sydney. Since then, ARC Discovery Projects grants DP170101922, DP180103561, DP220100489, and DP240100162, along with other funding, have reinforced our work in standoff sensing, integrated platforms, and 6G communications.

*Excludes 69 journal articles published prior to the lab's establishment in 2018.
Looking ahead
Our research spans strategic and applied work at the intersection of microwave engineering and optics, consolidating techniques from both domains to push terahertz technology towards practical, real-world applications.
